Patient Preparation

As a provider of patient care, your role in preparation is essential for the EAGLE III transport of your patient. Please consider the following guidelines to ensure the safest and most expedient transport for your patient.

Before the crew arrives (as appropriate):

  • Establish and maintain a patent airway with supplemental oxygen
  • Immobilize patient as appropriate (cervical collar, head blocks, and narrow, non-wooden longboard)
  • Establish two large bore (16 or 18 gauge) IV lines if able
  • Obtain consent for transport
  • Have two copies of all paperwork, including fin sheet, rescue squad run reports, one set will be for the transport team, one copy will be for the receiving facility
  • Have copies of all X-rays/CT scans for the receiving facility
  • As time allows, and as appropriate, place OG/NG and foley
  • Have the landing zone secured and ready for the helicopter. The EAGLE III crew will contact you if any additional equipment is needed.
  • Don't forget a current set of vital signs including a current body temp.

As the EAGLE III team arrives:

  • Do not approach the helicopter until the flight team directs you to do so; there is a 1-2 minute period for the engines to shut down and the rotors to stop moving.
  • NEVER approach the helicopter from the rear or near the tail; the flight team will direct you.
  • When loading the patient in the helicopter, head will be first, towards the front of the helicopter. Please allow the flight team to lead/handle equipment.
  • Be sure all loose objects such as papers, linen, and clothing are secured before the rotors start to turn to prevent anything from flying up into the blades.
  • After the patient is in the helicopter, please back away and allow the flight team to perform their aircraft inspection prior to lifting off.
